Dear High School Principals,

Greetings on behalf of the Green Mountain Local Section of the American Chemical Society.
We trust that you are having a productive and fulfilling year. As part of our outreach programs to secondary schools, we are pleased to invite you to nominate one of your teachers for the High school Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award, and are extending the invitation to your institution to be part of the process, by submitting a nomination from your school.

The requirements are that the nominee must be involved actively in the teaching of chemistry or a chemical science. To make a nomination, we request a supporting portfolio consisting of three 3) letters of recommendation, each no more than 2 pages in length, from you (principal or vice principal), a student, and a teacher colleague, as well as a personal statement from the nominee, documenting supporting examples that demonstrate the qualities below.
The attributes we are looking to reward, and award excellence in, are:

  • The quality of the nominee’s teaching (unusually effective methods of presentation should be emphasized);
  • The nominee’s ability to challenge and inspire students;
  • Extra-curricular work in chemistry or a chemical science by the nominee, including science fairs, science clubs, and activities that stimulate the interest of oung people in chemistry and related sciences;
  • A willingness to keep up-to-date in the field, as evidenced by the pursuit of a higher degree in chemistry or a chemical science, enrollment in refresher courses and summer institutes, regular attendance at scientific meetings, membership in professional organizations, and other means of self-improvement;
  • Evidence of leadership and/or active involvement within the profession

The award will consist of a cash prize of $150, and a year’s membership to the American
Association of Chemistry Teachers (the newly launched K-12 teachers-oriented organization
under the ACS umbrella). A certificate with the awardee’s name inscribed will accompany the
award, as well as a $150 donation to the advancement/enhancement of chemistry instruction at the school. The awardee’s name will also go forward to be nominated for the ACS Regional
Award for Excellence in High School Teaching. By this we hope to encourage, inspire and
motivate outstanding chemistry teaching and teachers in Vermont.

Please submit by email to greenmntacs[at], with the subject heading ‘High School
Teacher Award’, all supporting documents as a single pdf, by June 15, 2014. The winner will be announced in the Fall 2014 school term. Any queries should also be directed to the above email address.
